Community Service Project: Hallowoods
Hallowoods is a cleanup event held every year on the weekend of Halloween. The goal of the project is to clean the university hiking trails and connected parking lot which gets littered with food wrappers, beer cans, and even tires. On multiple occasions, students stumble upon recently hatched turtle nests and other animal nests belonging to snakes and mammals. By participating we will be keeping the hiking trails clean and beautiful for people and wildlife to enjoy.
How it all Started
During the summer of 2015, former president Samantha Sawyer noticed that painted turtles were laying eggs in nests along the hiking trail. As she looked around, there was a devastating sight of trash scattered around the trail. Upon informing former Vice President Angela Forte, they decided to start an annual cleanup of the hiking trails and parking lot in its entirety. Former historian James Kutlowski coined the name Hallowoods (Hallow meaning respected and woods referring to the hiking trails).
History of Hallowoods
The very first Hallowoods was held on October 31st, 2015 and the Biology Club collected 29 large bags of trash from the woods and parking lot.
The second annual Hallowoods event was held on October 30th, 2016 and had the help of Sigma Pi in collecting 26 large bags of trash from the hiking trails and parking lot.
The third annual Hallowoods event will be held October 28th, 2017 with the goal of collecting 30 large bags of trash! Help us accomplish our goal!
Philanthropy: Food Pantry
Starting Fall 2017 Biology Club selected the Food Pantry to be their Philanthropy. To contribute to the organization, Biology Club will be running canned food drives in addition to raising awareness of the resources found in the pantry and how hunger affects college students and the world.
What is the Food Pantry
The food pantry is a non-profit organization run by a fellow faculty member at Bridgewater State with the intention of providing a resource for students who do not have sufficient funds to purchase a meal to still be able to have something to eat so the student can focus on school instead of worrying about their next meal.
How Biology Club Chose the Food Pantry
The Biology Club Board wanted to choose a philanthropy that everyone in the club could participate in and that would be relatable to all the members that join. The food pantry is a resource that many students do not realize exists at Bridgewater State which the Biology Club intends on changing. Hunger hurts and giving back to the community is something that each member of the club board is passionate about.

Relay For Life

Biology Club participated in Relay for life in spring of 2016 at Bridgewater State University. Biology Club raised about $60 selling plastic pots to decorate with potting soil and seeds. The Biology Club is hoping to participate in 2017.
Universal Children's Day
The Biology Club presented a poster on Global Goal 14: Life Below Water in fall of 2016. Here they presented the importance of having a healthy and sustainable aquaculture system and what we can do to contribute to the cause.

Darwin Day
The Biology Club and TriBeta members donated their time to assist in Darwin Day. A day is set aside to celebrate Biology, Evolution, and Natural History. Local schools and the public are invited to learn from interactive booths, movies, undergraduate student posters and a guest speaker working in related research.
